Brandenton, FL. A pup is lucky to be alive after being found in a locked car on a scorching hot day. The window crack was only open less than an inch with hardly any air getting in at all.
Police said that the “dog appeared distressed and her owner couldn’t be located.” They feared that the owner wouldn’t return in time and that if the dog was in the car any longer she would die.
Sgt. Bordin from the Bradenton Police Department was the responding officer and saved the dog from the car by using a window breaking tool. He said to the pup:
“I know buddy, I’m gonna get you out. You’re hot in there, I get it.”
The window shattered, and Sgt. Bordin was able to pull the glass off. The pup was in much distress and hurried out after Sgt. Bordin said “Let’s get out of here.”
Once outside, the pup was wagging her tail and feeling much better even though the outside temperature was almost 90 degrees.
The Brandenton Police Department said that “In 90-degree weather, the temperature inside your vehicle can reach 109 degrees in 10 minutes and 124 degrees in 30 minutes.”
Investigation
The pup was able to recover in the air-conditioning of a patrol car. In the car, she drank nearly a liter of water showing how thirsty she was.
She was later taken for a check-up by Animal Services where she was kept safe while an investigation took place.
The authorities found that the dog had been left in the car for a long time. Any longer in the car, and she would have been seriously harmed or dead.
The American Kennel Club says that a parked vehicle with the window just opened by a crack heats up at the same rate as a vehicle with windows rolled up completely.
So any owner who leaves their dog in a car with the window open is asking for a calamity.
The dog’s owner was located by the police. They were interviewed and asked what on earth they were thinking by leaving their dog in the car.
But more details on the owner, and whether they are facing criminal charges, are still not known.
